English language gaining ground in Lithuania

The English language is rapidly gaining popularity in Lithuania - the percentage of people speaking English have risen to 30 percent from 17 percent over the last decade, figures show.

Based on the 2011 census data, 72 percent of people aged 15-29 said they spoke English, Statistics Lithuanian has said.

The Russian language is lagging behind English considerably among under-25-year-olds, while elder people are more likely to speak fluent Russian.

All in all, 63 percent of people in Lithuania can speak Russian, the census figures show. 8.5 percent can speak Polish, 8.3 percent know German, and almost 2 percent can speak French.
