Lithuanian Justice Ministry proposes law on unregistered opposite-sex partnership

Lithuania's Justice Ministry has drafted yet another bill on introducing the institution of partnership between an unmarried man and a woman.

Under the proposal, the Civil Code should envisage partnership as factual cohabitation with family relations. Such partnerships would not have to be registered.

"The proposal is to allow a model of personal relations between a male and a female on the basis of factual cohabitation and family relations without a registered civil agreement, it would be partnership by law," reads the accompanying document.

Partnership would only be allowed between persons of different sex, while same-sex partnership would not be recognized by law.

Partnership as consensual union without a registered marriage was envisaged in the Civil Code that took force in 2001. However, the institute does not work, as a special accompanying law was never adopted.
