"Lithuanian gasoline is cheaper by 5 cents (1.45 euro cents) in Latvia. That doesn't seem much, but one saves 1,500 litas per tank truck," it quoted Romandas Sadauskas, chairman of the Council of the Lithuanian Filling Stations' Union, as saying.
Smaller chains purchase Lithuanian-made gasoline in Latvia and sell most of it in Žemaitija, in the northwestern part of the country, he said.
That does not surprise fuel traders in the neighboring country.
"There are competitors to Mažeikiai-made gasoline in our country. So, Orlen Lietuva offers fuel at lower prices than in your country," Martins Stirans, head of the Latvian Fuel Traders Association, told Lietuvos Rytas.
The Lithuanian crude refinery holds a 70 percent share of the Latvian gasoline market and only 30 percent of the neighboring country's diesel fuel market.
