Chevron, the only bidder for a license to explore for shale gas in western Lithuania, will invest provided there is a favorable business environment in Lithuania, the chief executive officer of the US energy giant's Lithuanian subsidiary said on Thursday.

"If there's a favorable environment, there will be investments," Gilbert Ankenbauer, the CEO of Chevron Exploration & Production Lietuva, said during a meeting with Liberal MPs.

Ankenbauer underlined that no shale gas exploration or extraction technology experiments will be conducted in Lithuania. He said that knowing what Lithuania's natural resource deposits are is important for the country's energy security.

"Subsoil exploration is a safe and non-harmful thing," the Chevron official said.

Amid opposition to plans to explore for shale gas in western Lithuania, the Environment Ministry has postponed a meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, in which a commission was expected to name Chevron the winner of an exploration tender.
