The protocol was signed after a meeting of the Lithuanian-Polish Intergovernmental Economic Cooperation Commission, the Lithuanian Economy Ministry said on Thursday.

"Cooperation with Poland, which is Lithuania's strategic economic partner, is very significant. At the intergovernmental meeting, we exchanged up-to-date information on the implementation of projects of importance to both economies, especially in the areas of energy, transport and tourism," Lapinskas said in a press release.

"Since it was the first such meeting since 2009, I am glad that we renewed discussions on strengthening our bilateral economic cooperation. I am pleased that we managed to reach agreements with the Polish representatives on many important issues," he said.

The meeting focused on cooperation in the energy and transport sectors, with issues discussed including the construction of a gas terminal, possibilities of exploiting the potential of shale gas, developments in the electricity area, and the progress of the Rail Baltica and Via Baltica projects.

Poland ranked 4th among Lithuania's 184 trade partners in terms of the total trade volume in the first half of this year, at 5.944 billion litas (EUR 1.72b). It was seventh in terms of exports, at 2.075 billion litas, and third in terms of imports, at 3.368 billion litas.

Poland's direct investments in Lithuania amounted to 4.283 billion litas at the end of 2011, and to 5.475 billion litas in the first quarter of 2012.
