Lithuania is looking to cooperate with Denmark, which has a natural gas exchange operating since 2008, in developing its natural gas market.

Lithuanian Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas discussed cooperation possibilities with top managers of Denmark's gas and electricity transmission systems operator Energinet and the gas exchange Nord Pool Gas in Copenhagen last week, the Energy Ministry said in a press release.

"Lithuania's electricity exchange was organized based on Nord Pool Spot's principles. The successful development of the electricity market in cooperation with the Nordic partners encourages us to use their knowledge and experience in developing a gas exchange in Lithuania as well," it quoted Sekmokas as saying.

Energinet and the Nordic power exchange Nord Pool Spot established the gas exchange in 2008. A successful start and rapid development of the gas market opened the way for competition in Denmark's gas market and helped reduce the influence of a dominant gas supplier.
