Lithuania’s hotels experienced considerable growth

A total of 1.793 million people stayed at Lithuania’s hotels, guesthouses and other accommodation providers in 2011, up 15.4 percent versus 2010, Statistics Lithuania reported on Friday, citing provisional data.

The number of foreign guests rose by 19.5 percent, year-on-year, to 1.004 million, and the number of domestic guests increased by 10.7 percent, to 788,900.

The number of guests at hotels and guesthouses increased by 18.3 percent, to 1.381 million, and at health centers – by 7.2 percent, to 114,200.

The number of foreign guests at hotels and guesthouses rose by 19.9 percent last year, to 882,800, and at health centers – by 16.6 percent, to 28,800.

In Vilnius alone, the total number of guests at hotels and guesthouses increased by 22.9 percent, year-on-year, to 637,400, including 531,500 foreigners, up 23.7 percent. The occupancy rate of Vilnius hotels and guesthouses grew to 56 percent, from 46.8 percent in 2010.

In the fourth quarter alone, a total of 376,000 guests stayed at Lithuania’s hotels, guesthouses and other accommodation providers, up 15.7 percent, year-on-year. The number of visitors from the EU countries increased by 11.3 percent, of Lithuanian visitors – by 14.3 percent, and of guests from non-EU countries – by 24.8 percent.

The largest numbers of foreign guests came from Russia (35,100 visitors, up 32.5 pct y-o-y), Belarus (24,800, up 8.8 pct), Poland (22,600, down 1.3 pct), Latvia (17,300, up 21 pct) and Germany (15,100, up 25.8 pct) in the final quarter of 2011.

The number of tourists staying at accommodation providers in the resort of Druskininkai rose by 20.2 percent, year-on-year, to 64,000, between October and December, in Palanga – by 29.8 percent, to 26,000, in Birštonas – by 1 percent, to 6,400, and in Neringa – by 1.3 percent, to 2,500.

In the final quarter of 2011, the number of guests at hotels and guesthouses rose by 18.5 percent, year-on-year, to 311,100, including 176,900 foreigners, up 19.2 percent.

The occupancy rate at hotels and guesthouses rose to 39.9 percent in October-to-December, from 33.3 percent in the same period of 2010.

In Vilnius alone, the number of guests at hotels and guesthouses rose by 22.2 percent, year-on-year, to 145,500, including 115,900 foreigners, up 24.8 percent. The occupancy rate at Vilnius hotels and guesthouses rose to 52.2 percent, from 43.4 percent in the final quarter of 2010.
