Lithuania’s R&D spending grows to 0.92 percent of GDP

Spending on research and development (R&D) in Lithuania last year rose by 28.5 percent, year-on-year, to 974.3 million litas (EUR 282.4m), and accounted for 0.92 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), Statistics Lithuania reports.

In 2010, R&D expenditure made up 758.2 million litas and accounted for 0.8 percent of the country’s GDP, the office said.

Last year, spending on R&D in the higher education sector totaled 529.1 million litas (54.3 pct of the total expenditure), in the business companies’ sector – 254.1 million litas (26.1 pct), and in the general government sector – 191.1 million litas (19.6 pct).

The ratio between R&D expenditure and GDP in the higher education and general government sector last year made up 0.68 percent (up from 0.56 pct in 2010), and in the business companies’ sector, 0.24 percent (up from 0.23 pct).

Lithuania’s research workforce last year totaled 22,400 people, including 7,800 with a degree in science.
