Lithuania’s trade with Belarus at record high in 2012

Driven by transit and used car resellers, Lithuania’s trade with Belarus last year totaled unprecedented 3.9 billion litas (EUR 1.13b), the Lietuvos Rytas daily reports, quoting Vladimir Drazhin, Belarusian Ambassador to Lithuania.

The year 2012 was the best year in two decades in terms of diplomatic relations between the two countries, he pointed out.

However, the increase in actual bilateral trade was not that big, the daily writes. Lithuania’s buyers are cautious about Belarusian goods and Lithuania’s products often appear too expensive for the buyers from the neighboring country.

Mineral fuel and fertilizers accounted for the largest share of Lithuania’s imports from Belarus last year, according to data from Lithuania’s statistics office. However, the volumes of Belarusian fuel on the legal market did not increase.

Lithuania’s imports from Belarus soared by more than 23 percent in the first eleven months of 2012 compared with the same period a year before, which was the largest increase among all countries exporting their goods to Lithuania.

Lithuania imported 2.3 million litas worth of goods and services from Belarus in January through November, which matched the country’s imports from Belgium.
