A lawmaker proposes to allow municipalities all over Lithuania to impose a levy on overnight visitors to recreational areas on their territories, the business daily Verslo Žinios reports.

Conservative MP Valentinas Stundys has registered an amendment to the Law on Fees and Charges that calls for allowing any municipal council to introduce a levy "for using the public infrastructure of residential areas that are designated (...) as recreational areas."

The existing law allows only resorts to charge such levies.

The resorts of Druskininkai, Palanga, and Birštonas have introduced the so-called "pillow" tax on all overnight visitors.
