In the fourth quarter alone, cargo traffic shrank by 2.7 percent, year-on-year, to 24.039 million tons, and passenger traffic was up by 2.6 percent, to 107.642 million, the office said citing early estimates.
In 2011, most freight was transported by railways and roads, at 49.1 percent and 43.2 percent, respectively. Sea transport accounted for 6.7 percent of the total goods traffic, inland waterways transport for 1 percent, and Lithuanian airlines’ aircraft for 0.003 percent.
Total rail freight traffic last year increased by 8.9 percent from a year ago, to 52.33 million tons. Goods traffic by road transport rose by 2.9 percent, to 46.019 million tons, by sea transport – by 6.2 percent, to 7.184 million tons, by inland waterways transport – by 4.2 percent, to 1.038 million tons, and by Lithuanian airlines’ aircraft – by 19.4 percent, to 3,480 tons.
Road transport accounted for 98.2 percent of all passenger traffic in 2011, with the number of passengers carried by road up by 1.8 percent, year-on-year, to 387.125 million.
