My mother, Nina Zelbovich, was born and raised in the Lithuanian shtetl of Birzh (Biržai), close to the Latvian border. In 1924, the British passport control office in Kovno gave her a visa to enter South Africa, where she lived for the next 60 years of her life. However, Birzh was for her always “der heim,” the home.
