Svaigedas Stoškus, acting director of the Kaunas Territorial Division of the Lithuanian Department of Cultural Heritage, says that tending of abandoned Jewish graves in Kaunas is one of the most important tasks.

"One of the most important tasks I set for myself is the preservation and tending of the Jewish heritage in Kaunas. Kaunas lost a lot of Lithuanian citizens of Jewish nationality during the war. I don't know if there are many properties in Kaunas belonging to Jewish people, but there's one Jewish cemetery which is abandoned," Stoškus said in an interview to the Kauno Diena daily on Tuesday.

"One man of Jewish nationality came to me and showed how his mother's grave in Kaunas looked like 20 years ago, 10 years ago and now. It's abandoned. His heart is breaking every time he comes to Kaunas. It’s such a disgrace for Kaunas. Together with Kaunas residents of Jewish nationality who are still great patriots of the city, we'll try to do something positive. Everyone will see the benefit of that, and Kaunas will be once again a culture-promoting and tolerant European city," Stoškus said.
