The Lithuanian capital's slogan is I Read Therefore I Am, with plans to hold a number of cultural projects and engage in cooperation with the country's second-largest city Kaunas, the municipality has said.
In the project application, Vilnius indicated the main continuous cultural events held in the city from year to year, including the Poetry Spring, which will mark its 50-year anniversary in 2014, the culture night, the international literature forum Northern Summer, etc.
The application also presents new initiatives dedicated to 2014, for example, a forum of Central and Eastern European writers, literature tours of Vilnius, digital book in public libraries in Vilnius, international conference Vilnius as the Center of Publication of Multilingual Literature, etc.
Vilnius Mayor Artūras Zuokas says the World Book Capital Committee will decide which city is chosen for 2014 capital in May.
The initiative should be presented at the London Book Fair later this month. Last year, the title of World Book Capital was bestowed to Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, Armenia's Yerevan was named this year and Bangkok will be the World Book Capital in 2013.
