Regina Narušienė, the community's former chairwoman, is baffled by the wish to use the flag as, she says, it will only bring more confusion. Lithuania has only one state flag and that is the tricolor, she stresses.
"Since the independence in 1918, our flag has had three colors – yellow, green and red. Do we need one more flag? No country has two flags," Narušienė said.
Conservative MPs Kęstutis Masiulis and Stasys Šedbaras have initiated amendments to the Law on the Lithuanian State Flag proposing to update the list of locations and occasions for hoisting the Lithuanian historic flag. The Seimas has already given its initial backing.
Currently, the state historic flag is permanently hoisted at three locations: the Palace of Grand Dukes of Lithuania, Trakai Island Castle, and the grounds of the Vytautas the Great War Museum in Kaunas. Lithuanian lawmakers would like to see the flag hoisted near and/or on the buildings of some other state institutions and old castles.
In 2004, along with the Law on the Lithuanian State Flag, the Lithuanian Seimas legalized the state historic flag. Historically, this flag was used during the Battle of Grunwald and served as the government flag for Central Lithuania from 1922 until 1939.
