On Tuesday, Falkenberg discussed preparation for the EU presidency with Lithuanian Minister of Environment Valentinas Mazuronis.

"Lithuanian will seek agreement of all EU member states on key environmental issues," the minister was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the Ministry of Environment.

The director general for the environment also stressed that if agreement on the LIFE directive for the new financial period of 2014-2020 and the 7th Environmental Action Programme is not reached until the end of the Irish EU presidency, Lithuania will have to take over the task.

"Falkenberg hopes that our country will reach agreement on the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive during its presidency," the statement said.
