"You and we will do everything to ensure that the Baltic countries are not isolated in the EU context. So, your (Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė's) priority is very timely," he said while speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Leaders of some European Parliament groups also expressed their support for Lithuania.
"This is a very sensitive issue. Energy islands still exist. We have to improve the European energy grid, but we need major investment in the gas infrastructure networks. Only Europe can ensure such legal security. Mr. President, we hope that your presidency will lead to achievement of those objectives," said French MEP Joseph Daul, the chairman of the Group of the European People's Party, which brings together center and center-right political forces from the EU's member states.
"We are thinking about such countries as Georgia and Ukraine. We know that Mr. Putin (Russian President Vladimir Putin) is ready to give with one hand and take away with the other," said Hannes Swoboda, the leader of the Socialists & Democrats Group.
While presenting the Lithuanian EU presidency's priorities to the European Parliament, Grybauskaitė said that no countries in the European Union should remain isolated from Europe's gas and electricity grids after 2015 and that more funds are needed to achieve this goal.
