"It is important that the European Parliament does not delay the approval of the multiannual EU budget, so that the programs financed from the budget could be launched in time," Grybauskaitė said in a press release circulated after a meeting with chairman of the EP Committee on Budgets Alain Lamassoure on Thursday.

Lithuania is holding EU Council presidency in the second half of 2013 and heads negotiations on the new budget programs.

"For Europeans to be able to use the money intended for agriculture, reduction of youth unemployment, innovations and other areas, fast solutions will be necessary. Implementation of these programs is crucial for economic revival of the European Union," the president said.

The multiannual 2014-2020 EU budget consists 960 billion euros, including over 44 billion litas (EUR 12.8b) earmarked for Lithuania.
