Russian citizen busted at attempt to smuggle nearly 90,000 euros out of Lithuania

Authorities of Lithuania's port city of Klaipėda have detained a Russian citizen suspected of attempting to smuggle over 310,000 litas (EUR 90,000) worth of undeclared cash out of the country, the Financial Crimes Investigation Service has reported.

The Russian citizen, 47, is suspected of attempting to smuggle out 89,750 euros, 1,750 Russian rubles and 500 litas. An investigation has been opened by the FCIS Klaipėda branch and Klaipėda prosecutors.

The probe was opened after the cash was discovered aboard the Russian man's BMW X6 en route to Russia's Kaliningrad region via Nida checkpoint on the afternoon of 17 April.

Under Lithuanian laws, people going to third countries via the territory of Lithuania are required to declare any cash that exceeds the sum of 10,000 euros.

Smuggling charges were brought against the Russian man, he was released on a 60,000 litas bail after questioning.
