According to the Ministry of Environment, barriers are being used to stop the pollutants spreading, and cleanup work is underway.
The situation is being monitored by environment officers who are supervising the cleanup work and taking water specimen for laboratory tests, the ministry said. They are also cooperating with emergency services in looking for additional measures to liquidate the consequences of the accident as soon as possible.
The traffic accident involving a trailer and a fuel truck took place at around 3 PM on Wednesday. Around 5.5 tons of diesel fuel leaked from the fuel truck, with a large quantity of diesel subsequently reaching the river through the rainwater collection system.
Environment officers plan to calculate the damage done to the environment after the cleanup is finished.
