Belarusian ambassador summoned to Lithuanian Foreign Ministry

On Wednesday, Belarusian Ambassador to Lithuania, Vladimir Drazhin, was summoned to the Lithuanian Ministry o Foreign Affairs after the European Union and Belarus exchanged statements on the recall of diplomats.

On Tuesday, Belarus' Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the Polish and EU ambassadors to leave the country and also announced it had recalled is ambassadors from Brussels and Warsaw. Ambassadors of all EU member states were later recalled.

"It was underlined during the meeting that Minsk should have no doubts on the continuity of the European Union's common position towards Belarus. The head of the Belarusian embassy in Lithuania was also informed that Lithuania was also recalling its ambassador for consultations in solidarity with EU partners," the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Drazhin was also assured that "Lithuania is interested in good neighborly relations with Belarus and its people but Belarus has to respect fundamental human rights and freedoms, release and rehabilitate political prisoners, stop persecuting political opposition and independent media, suspend intimidation of EU diplomats," the ministry said.

"Normalization of Belarusian-EU relations is in the hands of Minsk," Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Azubalis said earlier on Wednesday Lithuania's Ambassador to Belarus, Edminas Bagdonas, would return to Vilnius for consultations this week.
