Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius has proposed that Health Care Minister Raimondas Šukys be appointed as acting interior minister to replace Raimundas Palaitis resigning from the post.

The proposal is stipulated in a document handed to President Dalia Grybauskaitė, the prime minister's adviser Virgis Valentinavičius confirmed to BNS on Wednesday.

Presidential adviser Daiva Ulbinaite told BNS the prime minister's request had been received, and the announcement about the presidential decree would be made after the president signed it.

Kubilius has promised to take into account the coalition agreement and a candidate's professionalism while choosing a new permanent minister of interior affairs.

"The coalition agreement will determine, and also professionalism and ability to solve problems, the number of which has grown in the interior affairs system recently," Kubilius told journalists on Wednesday, asked whether it was only the Liberal and Center Union's candidate that would be considered for the post.

Palaitis submitted his resignation earlier on Wednesday amid criticism from the conservative leaders over sacking of two top officers in the Financial Crimes Investigation Service. The minister said he was stepping down as of 26 March.
