Lithuanian parliament speaker says it is taking too long to decide on Visaginas NPP

Lithuania’s parliamentary speaker Vydas Gedvilas believes that it is taking too long for Lithuania to decide whether to build a new nuclear power plant.

“We are taking too much time to make decisions. We said in spring that we would take some decision after getting experts’ conclusions… Of course, this issue is very subtle and important and it’s not possible to decide quickly,” he said in an interview to Žinių Radijas on Wednesday.

Gedvilas added that he would soon meet with Energy Minister Jaroslav Neverovič as he wanted to find out the latest developments in discussions on the new nuclear facility.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said earlier this week that a final decision whether to build a nuclear power plant in Visaginas should be made this coming autumn.

A working group appointed by Butkevičius concluded last spring that the nuclear power project, in its current form, was too expensive for Lithuania and that the price of electricity generated at the new facility might be non-competitive.

The authorities then said that the project could only be continued if its terms and conditions were improved through talks with Latvian and Estonian energy companies and Japan‘s Hitachi.

The Cabinet then gave Neverovič until July 1 for discussions with Latvians, Estonians ,and Hitachi on whether the Visaginas project was acceptable to them under the new conditions. It was said at that time that if the partners decided to go ahead with the project together, then a final decision on setting up a company for the implementation of the project would be made by October 1.
