"Only the Constitutional Court can evaluate and analyze the Central Electoral Commission's decisions and decide whether the Law on Elections to the Seimas was breached," the president said on Tuesday.

According to Grybauskaitė, it is the first time in the country's history when Seimas election results are deemed invalid following the first round of voting, therefore, the Constitutional Court's ruling is of vital importance for the country's further democratic development.

The president turned to the Constitutional Court after a request by the Order and Justice Party, the Press Service of the President said. The opposition party is contesting the election panel's decision to cancel the election results in Zarasai-Visaginas single-member constituency where Algimantas Dumbrava of the Order and Justice Party won a majority in the first round of voting, and Rimvydas Podolskis, a candidate of the Labour Party who, the Central Electoral Commission says, committed gross violations of the election law, came in second.

The Central Electoral Commission ruled on Saturday that Podolskis bribed voters and thus grossly violated the Law on Elections to the Seimas.

Update. On Tuesday, Lithuania's Constitutional Court accepted the motion filed by President Dalia Grybauskaitė, asking to evaluate the decision made by the Central Electoral Commission to invalidate the election results in Zarasai – Visaginas district.

"The decision to accept has just been made," Vaiva Minkevičienė of the secretariat of the Constitutional Court's chairman told BNS.

According to her, the court will hear the president's appeal at its meeting at 10 AM on Wednesday.
