The president called upon the population, asking to actively and responsibly participate in the election in order to pick parliamentarians who deserve their trust.

"The current Seimas was elected by less than half of eligible voters. Let's not allow others choose for us. Let's be civil. Let's be active," she said in the press release.

In the decree, Grybauskaitė urged all political parties to "compete by way of ideas, not money, in order to go to the election with principles of honesty and honor."

Under the law, general election is announced six months before the expiry of incumbent parliamentarians' mandates.

Announcement of the election day serves as official start of election campaign.

No sense in debating early election

Lithuania's Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius says that the discussions of early general elections are senseless.

"I see no sense but this is not the first or the last time the Seimas is discussing this amid upcoming general elections, and the result will probably also be similar this time," the prime minister said in an interview to Žinių Radijas news radio on Thursday morning.

He said he didn't think "there should be discussions and disputes for making the election date a few months earlier."

On Tuesday, the parliament approved for discussion a draft resolution on holding early elections on 3 June, with adoption scheduled for next week.
