Vilnius Municipality to set up its own TV studio

Vilnius administration has purchased a professional television camera, microphones, lights and editing equipment and now plans to set up a television studio for political debates, the Vilniaus Diena daily reports on Wednesday.

The studio plans were communicated to elders of political groups by Vilnius City Mayor Arturas Zuokas on Monday. Irma Juškėnaitė, head of the Public Relations Division of Vilnius Municipality, said the studio would be located on the second floor of the municipality building next to the meeting room of the city council.

"It is an idea developed jointly by the division. It is the municipality's Public Relations Division that will hold debates of politicians of the capital city. Politicians will also be able to initiate the debates, use the room and invite journalists. This is the use of the equipment that is being purchased," Juškėnaitė said.

Nevertheless, other politicians believe the Lithuanian capital city's mayor may use the studio for self-promotion only.

"Of course, the mayor who has a Public Relations Division will be able to use the television studio for political ends. I would not be happy with this. It would be unfair political competition. The extent to which other politicians will be able to use the equipment is not clear," Šarūnas Birutis, elder of the Labor Party's group, said.
