During his meeting with Hitachi Vice-president Koji Tanaka in Vilnius, Linkevičius underlined the need for evaluating the economic viability of the Visaginas project, as agreed by the three Baltic countries and the Japanese corporation, the Foreign Ministry said.

Linkevičius said that it was in Lithuania's interest to cooperate with Japan, adding that Hitachi's participation in a new regional nuclear power plant project would provide a fresh impetus to the bilateral relations between the countries.

The Lithuanian government has not yet made its final decision on whether to go ahead with the Visaginas project, but expects to do so this fall.
