Lithuanian Foreign Ministry advises against travelling to Syria

Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recommended not to travel to Syria and urged Lithuanian citizens currently in Syria to leave the Middle Eastern state as soon as possible.

The ministry issued the recommendation to leave Syria before any travel restrictions are inposed, including on regular flights.

Lithuanian citizens in Syria are warned of the fact that EU embassies start cutting down on their activities and suspending their regular consular functions. Moreover, people are warned to exercise caution, register at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Lithuanian Embassy in Egypt by e-mail or telephone. In case of an accident, people can contact the Embassy of Hungary in Damascus.

The situation in Syria is deteriorating, with clashes being reported in various parts of the country. Possibility of an armed resistance or civil war is growing every day. Around 6,000 people have been killed in Syria since March.
