Lithuanian road carriers association assessing situation at border with Russia

Linava, Lithuania’s national road carriers’ association, has warned that it is too early to celebrate news that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has ordered to lift tightened checks at Russia’s border with Lithuania.

“Information is being checked now, we want to review it thoroughly. It would be too early to be happy. We want to collect the latest information about the situation at the border by noon,” Algimantas Kondrusevičius, Linava president, told BNS.

“Information coming from some drivers is different, the vehicles that were stopped earlier are still standing. Information is rather controversial… Some reports are optimistic but information is unofficial,” he added.

The Russian Federal Customs Service stated on Wednesday that Putin had ordered the service to lift the enhanced customs control at the Russian-Lithuanian border and to switch to a normal regime on Thursday, October 10.

Russia imposed tightened customs checks on goods from Lithuania and on Lithuanian truckers in September. Earlier this week, it stopped imports of Lithuanian dairy products.
