More than 400 Lithuanian troops served in the international operation in Afghanistan in 2011, more than 60 million litas (EUR 17.4 mln) were spent for the purpose, the Defense Ministry said.

"Over the past year, a total of approximately 400 soldiers and three rotations of the Special Operations Forces participated in the NATO-led ISAF operation in Afghanistan, four troops served in the NATO training mission in Iraq," the ministry told BNS.

The number of Lithuanian special operators involved in the operation in Afghanistan is withheld.

"Approximately 60 million litas were spend on the participation of Lithuanian troops in international operations and missions in 2011, including the funds received in the framework of the United States support foundation and the remainder of transitional funds existing in Afghanistan's credit institutions," the ministry noted.

In addition to the money received from the US, Lithuania spent about 54 million litas on international missions last year.

The majority of the soldiers served in the Ghor province where Lithuania has been heading a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) since 2005 but plans to withdraw in 2013.
