"For more than six decades, the Lithuanian-language gymnasium in Germany remains an island of Lithuanian culture and education, the only school of this type in the Western world," she said after the opening ceremony.

Degutienė emphasized that the gymnasium had always been important for Lithuania and Lithuanians, wishing that the connection was mutual, i.e., the young people studying in the gymnasium also needed Lithuania. The parliamentary speaker also thanked German officials present at the event for their constant support and assistance to the 16 February Gymnasium, the parliament's Public Relations Division said.

According to the press release, construction of the new facilities was started in 2010. The project was estimated at about 1 million euros donated by Lithuania's government, Mainz diocese, as well as the money envisaged in the 2009 German governmental program for construction and infrastructure development in municipal education and health care institutions.
