In a statement issued by the Press Service of the President, Grybauskaitė said the issue of Bulgaria's membership in the Schengen area will be considered during the upcoming Lithuanian EU presidency.

"According to the head of state, Lithuania strongly supports Bulgaria's aspiration, but underline that all necessary conditions must be properly fulfilled," the statement said.

Any efforts to expand the Schengen area, which encompasses a population of around 400 million, needs unanimous approval of all members.

Germany and the Netherlands previously objected to Romania and Bulgaria's membership in the Schengen area.
