On Wednesday, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė accepted letters of credence from a new Ambassador of the Order of Malta, Christian Baron von Bechtolsheim. He will replace Count Douglas von Saurma-Jeltsch, who served as ambassador for five years.

According to the President's Office, the ambassador resides in Germany.

The diplomatic corps of the Order of Malta consist of professional diplomats who have retired from active service and wish to engage in volunteer work, as well as of the members of the Order who have experience in international relations.

The mission of the ambassadors is strictly humanitarian and is aimed at facilitating the humanitarian aid where public needs are met.

Lithuanian and the Order of Malta established diplomatic relations in July 1992.
