According to him, this will depend on what sort of Lithuania it might find in this sector. This will be something that a specially assembled workgroup will begin assessing already next year.
This week, Turkey threatened to expel from the country the US and nine other Western countries’ ambassadors who released a joint declaration urging to release an imprisoned Turkish philanthropist and activist. The Lithuanian ambassador in Ankara was not a signatory despite the government declaring that the agenda of freedom and democracy has become the core principle of its foreign policy. Analysts consulted by 15min say that these are obvious double standards, but Lithuania must balance pragmatically when it comes to Turkey.
Colleagues in G. Landsbergis’ party are looking to launch an initiative to demand for President Gitanas Nausėda’s advisor to come to the Seimas to offer clarification. After the first round of Seimas elections a year ago, it started becoming clear that Lithuania would have a new ruling centre-right coalition and cabinet. According to political scientists, this year has been difficult due to the continuing coronavirus pandemic and the erupted migrant crisis. The ruling bloc was mostly preoccupied with putting out fires rather than implementing reforms. There are, however, tensions that could have been avoided, those between the Conservatives and President Gitanas Nausėda, for example.
Polish President Andrzej Duda, who arrived for a two-day visit to Lithuania, will likely be hearing not for the first time just how precious Warsaw’s partnership is to Vilnius. The support of Lithuania and President Gitanas Nausėda is important to him because Poland wishes to show that, in the face of confrontation with the European Union, it is not left without friends. On the eve of the visit, 15min spoke to four Polish political experts regarding Warsaw’s expectations.
The opposition Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has voiced criticism regarding Lithuania’s foreign policy – supposedly, there are many ambitions but few results to show for it. Former party chairman Gintautas Paluckas urges to model the consequences of decisions more responsibly and describes as mistakes the decisions to open the Belarusian opposition and Taiwanese representations in Vilnius.
