Portugal were heavily favored to win the match, and were heavy favorites to ultimately win the World Cup, but were stunned to find themselves down 3-nil after goals from John O'Brien (4'), an own goal (a deflected Landon Donovan shot)(29') and Brian McBride (36'). Beto scored for Portugal in the 39th minute, and US defender Jeff Agoos gifted Portugal an awful own goal in the 71', but the Americans hung on to win in an upset that is second only to the team's 1-nil defeat of England in the 1950 World Cup.
