Europe's highest active volcano sent plumes of ash and lava into the skies of Sicily on Sunday. Mount Etna spewed out smoke and glowing lava metres into the sky, putting on quite a display. Authorities at Catania airport made the decision to reschedule flights to other airports in Sicily to avoid the hazardous ash clouds caused by the eruption. Europe's tallest and most active volcano, has been putting on displays throughout the year with activity seen around its southern crater. The south-eastern crater was born in 1971 and has been the most active in recent years. Etna, which is located above the Sicilian town of Catania, often erupts but rarely causes damage. While the present eruption is not of concern to the local community, residents do have to live with the noise and ash showers that follow. Report by Claire Lomas.
