Ugaaso grew up in Canada having fled Somalia when civil war broke out in 1991. She returned in 2014 to see her mother for the first time in 20 years and to give the world a better look at Somalia. Instagram has made her a familiar face to expatriate Somalis around the globe and increasingly on the streets of Mogadishu too. The #Somalia hashtag has almost 100,000 posts on Instagram as people use the platform to shine a light on the countries turnaround.
