Vilnius authorities want nationalist Independence Day march out of central street

Vilnius authorities have proposed moving a controversial nationalist march, held every year on the Day of Restoration of Lithuania's Independence on March 11, to a less central location. The march, traditionally held in the central Gediminas Avenue, may be relocated to Upės Street.

Vilnius Municipality said in a statement sent to BNS that state and municipal institutions have a prerogative to choose locations and time of their events.

Several events are already planned in Gediminas Avenue on March 11.

"Since official events dedicated to the Day of Restoration of Lithuania's Independence will take place in Gediminas Avenue, another location, namely Upės Street, has been proposed to march organizers (the Lithuanian National Center and the Union of Lithuanian National Youth)," said Julius Morkūnas, deputy director of Vilnius Municipality Safe City Department.

The proposal angered Romualdas Ozoloas, a signatory of the Act of Independence, who said that "politically engaged" municipality clerks know in advance that Gediminas Avenue, the traditional location for the youth march, will be occupied the entire day by still-undecided municipality events.

Critics note that skinheads also joined the march last year. They were carrying banners saying "Skinhead For Native Lithuania, Race, and Nations", "No To The East And The West", "Lithuania For Lithuania's Children" and were chanting "Lithuania for Lithuanians."

Around 900 people then took part in the march.
