Hilton hotel to be built in Kaunas

A four-star Hilton hotel, an investment worth around 60 million litas (EUR 17.4m), will be built at the site of Merkurijus, a department store that was built in Soviet times and has already been demolished, on the main artery of Kaunas, Laisvės avenue, the Lietuvos Rytas daily reports.

The hotel with 130 rooms will operate with the brand name of Double Tree By Hilton, which is part of Hilton hotel group.

“The investors are currently discussing the terms of franchise with the hotel chain, they are also negotiating the management of the building,” Algimantas Kancas, a well-known Kaunas architect working on this project, told the daily.

Dutch and Canadian owned Homburg Merkurijus acquired Merkurijus’ building before the economic downturn.
