On Thursday, the Seimas of Lithuania voted to legalize growing, processing, as well as importing and exporting industrial hemp.

The amendments to the Law on Industrial Hemp were adopted 66 votes to 16 with 22 abstentions.

If President Dalia Grybauskaitė signs the amendments into law, it will come into force on January 1.

The law defines industrial hemp as Cannabissativa L. plants of the Cannabaceae family, which contain no more than 0.2 percent of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the principal psychoactive constituent of the cannabis plant, in the dried form.

Lithuania is currently the only member state of the European Union where growing industrial hemp is officially banned.
