Lithuania’s milk imports from Latvia and Estonia soars 43 percent

Lithuania’s imports of milk from Latvia and Estonia soared by 43.1 percent in 2011 compared with a year before, the Verslo Zinios business daily reports on Tuesday.

However, it appears that some local farmers tend to ship raw milk to Estonia and Poland so as to put pressure on domestic dairies.

"The processors are getting ready for a potential decline in raw milk supply in Latvia since the Russians have acquired two largest local processing companies, which may need more milk.
Moreover, the processors seek to avoid an increase in prices in Lithuania. It is a kind of political game aimed at safeguarding the domestic market”, Naglis Narauskas, chairman of the cooperative society Pienas LT, told the daily.

Agricultural Deputy Minister Bronius Markauskas told the daily that Lithuania’s companies ran at 50 percent of their capacity.
