Lithuanian Energy’s shareholders okay expansion of Kruonis power facility

The shareholders of Lithuania’s state-owned electricity production group Lietuvos Energija (Lithuanian Energy) have given the go-ahead to the expansion of the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant (KPSP) and the project of heat generation at Lietuvos Elektrinė (Lithuanian Power Plant).

The shareholders’ meeting also decided to switch off and dismantle the 3rd and the 4th units of Lietuvos Elektrinė, Lietuvos Energija reported through the NASDAQ OMX Vilnius Stock Exchange.

The shareholders okayed a proposal from Lietuvos Energija board to update technical specifications for a 225 MW asynchronous hydro unit planned to be built at the KPSP. A tender to select the contractor should be issued by the end of this year. The specifications will reportedly include a requirement for the new KPSP unit to be put in operation before the launch of Lithuania’s power links with Sweden and Poland, i.e. NordBalt and LitPol Link, respectively.

The shareholders also gave the go-ahead to the investment project involving the installation of biofuel boilers at Lietuvos Elektrinė. A tender for the installation of biofuel boilers at Lietuvos Elektrinė was issued by Lietuvos Energija in July. Some of new heat-from-biofuel generation capacities should be put in operation in 2013 and the entire upgrade of heat generation technologies should be completed in 2014.

The 3rd and the 4th units of Lietuvos Elektrinė, which were built between 40 and 50 years ago, will be dismantled as they will be replaced by the 9th unit, which is being tested now.

The 9th unit of Lietuvos Elektrinė, which will have the efficiency of more than 58 percent, will be able to meet between 20 and 25 percent of domestic electricity demand. It will consume 30 percent less natural gas, compared with the units of Lietuvos Elektrinė it will replace.

State-owned Visagino Atominė Elektrinė (Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant, or VAE) holds a 96.13 percent stake in Lietuvos Energija, which also owns the Lithuanian Power Plant in Elektrėnai and the Kaunas Hydro Power Plant.

Lietuvos Energija is quoted on the blue-chip Main List of the NASDAQ OMX Vilnius Stock Exchange.
