After the upgrade of the section, which is part of the IX international transport corridor, passenger trains will be able to travel at the speed of up to 160 kilometers per hour, and freight trains – at the speed of up to 120 kilometers per hour.
The company issued a preliminary tender to design the reconstruction of the railway line between Vilnius and Lithuania’s border with Belarus through Kena on Wednesday .
The contractor will have to design the upgrade of the entire section as well as the stations of Kena, Naujoji Vilnia, and Vilnius.
The company had not disclosed the preliminary value of this project as yet, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai spokesman Vidmantas Gudas told BNS. The last contract was expected to be signed by 2015 and the project should be implemented by September 2017, he added.
A consortium of French-owned Eurovia Lietuva, Czech-owned Eurovia and Lithuania’s electronic engineering solutions developer Fima seeks to electrify the section. The consortium has won a respective tender but the contract has not yet been signed.
Lietuvos Geležinkeliai wants the railway line connecting Kena and Klaipėda to be the key corridor for the freight exported by Belarus.
