UK and Baltic states pledge close economic cooperation

Lithuania's Foreign Vice-Ministers Egidijus Meilūnas and Vytautas Leškevičius met with UK Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills Vince Cable in Vilnius on Tuesday to discuss the situation on the European Union's (EU) internal market, negotiations on EU's new long-term budget, and the regional cooperation among the UK, Nordic, and Baltic countries.

The three officials said at the meeting that Lithuania and the United Kingdom are partners in close cooperation, regularly discussing and coordinating their positions on key issues, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

Moreover, Meilūnas, Leškevičius, and Cable noted UK's growing attention to the Baltic-Nordic region. They agreed to further develop regional cooperation.

Key topics addressed at the Tuesday's meeting included operationa of the internal market of the EU and possibilities to improve it, negotiations on EU's 2014-2020 financial perspective.

Other issues on the agenda included the ongoing EU negotiations with third countries on trade liberalization. The Lithuanian vice-minister emphasized the importance of the principle of mutuality in an effort to ensure equal competition opportunities for EU exporters.

Cable was in Vilnius on the invitation of Economy Minister Rimantas Žylius to attend a meeting of the working group of 15 EU member-states. The meeting was aimed at agreeing on the key instruments for improving the functioning of EU's home market.
