Although some companies do not rule out cutting their workforce, a much larger number of them are thinking about expansion and are speaking about raising salaries. More than half of Baltic employers plan to hire new personnel in 2013, the business daily Verslo Žinios reports.

"We may say that while Scandinavian employers are forecasting a considerable number of layoffs in 2013, Baltic employers are quite optimistic. Also, given that there is a shortage of specialists in some areas of industry, we may expect that there will be an intense battle for talent in 2013," said Danguolė Augustinienė, CEO of the personnel search and recruitment company CV-Online LT.

She said that more than 60 Lithuanian employers planned to hire new personnel in the coming six months. The respective percentage figures in Estonia and Latvia were 40 percent and 50 percent. Mere 4 percent of employers planned to lay off at least several employees. However, only 13 percent of companies in Estonia, 31 percent in Latvia, and 37 percent in Lithuania intended to increase their employees’ salaries in 2013.
