Fall in EURIBOR rates prompt Lithuanian households to take out loans

A fall in EURIBOR rates to record lows is just one of the factors that may prompt households to take out a loan, the Lietuvos Rytas daily reports on Wednesday quoting representatives of Lithuania’s commercial banks.

“First of all, there should be a need to move to a larger home or to move out of one's parents’ home,” Darius Jasinskis, director of product management department at Danske Bank, told the daily.

However, the number of newly issued home loans is growing. For example, SEB Bankas claims that the number of housing loans it issued in the first half of this year increased by nearly 10 percent from the same period last year.

“In most cases, the customers interested in home loans are people with stable income who live in major cities and look for the a family home,” Virginijus Doveika, head of retail banking at SEB Bankas, told the daily.

However, some households are in no rush to take a loan as they expect property prices to decline further. One-fifth of the households polled by SEB Bankas hope that the prices of housing will fall.
