The Press Service of the President said in a statement that Fortum Heat Lietuva - a subsidiary of the Finnish corporation Fortum, the fourth largest energy company in the world - is completing a combined heat and power plant in Klaipėda fueled by biomass and household waste.

"The plant, which is expected to cover about 40 percent of Klaipėda's heating needs, is the first such project launched in Lithuania. It introduces a modern and ecologically friendly way of waste management to deal with environmental problems and also to reduce consumer heating bills," the Office said in the statement.

Fortum Heat Lietuva has also started working on plans to build a cogeneration power plant in Kaunas and has a construction project scheduled for Vilnius. Such waste-to-energy plants will generate reliable district heating for competitive prices.

The Finnish speaker attended festive events dedicated to the 23rd anniversary of the Day of Restoration of Lithuania's Independence.
