Ignalina nuclear plant to get 122.6 million euros in EU support

A total of 122.6 million euros of the European Union (EU) support should be extended to Lithuania’s defunct Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INP) and its decommissioning projects in 2012.

This funding would be allocated to the so-called “Ignalina Program”, which is administered in Lithuania by the Central Project Management Agency.

The biggest amount will be allocated for the INPP supervision and safety measures until the removal of spent nuclear fuel from the second reactor and for the implementation of decommissioning projects. Some funding would also be provided to new projects, including the management of graphite and metal waste, and a surface repository for low-to-moderate activity radioactive waste, the Finance Ministry said in a note to the government.

On Monday, the government will discuss a 2012 draft of Combined Programming Document for the implementation of the Ignalina Program and a preliminary plan on the allocation of program funds in 2007-2013.

The Programming Document was produced to the European Commission in March. As pointed out at the meeting of the EU Nuclear Decommissioning Assistance Program committee, it was a preliminary draft, which had not been endorsed by Lithuania’s government.
