Kaunas Bridges and Mitnija bag hundred-million-euro order from Lithuanian Railways

A consortium of Kauno Tiltai (Kaunas Bridges), the biggest Baltic road infrastructure construction company controlled by Poland’s leading rail and road infrastructure group Trakcja-Tiltra, and Mitnija, a construction company controlled by MG Baltic concern, will build second rail tracks in Western Lithuania under a 330 million litas (EUR 95.65m) order from Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways), the Lithuanian state-owned railway operator.

Three of four contracts tendered were signed this week. The tender for the construction of the fourth line should be terminated amid shortage of funds.

Trakcja-Tiltra reported through Warsaw Stock Exchange that a 104.907-million-litas (VAT included) contract for the construction of second tracks on the section between Pavenčiai and Raudėnai and a 103.818-million-litas contract for the construction of second tracks on the section between Telšiai and Duseikiai were signed with Lietuvos Geležinkeliai on 30 October.

Vidmantas Gudas, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai spokesman, told BNS that the third contract, worth 120.879 million litas, on the construction of second tracks on the section between Kulupėnai and Kretinga was signed on 31 October. The fourth contract on the construction of second tracks between Plungė and Sateikiai (174.538 million litas) will probably not be signed, although the consortium of Kauno Tiltai and Mitnija has been announced the winner of a respective tender.

“This project has been included into the reserve list since there is no funding available for it for the meantime. Therefore we asked the Public Procurement Service to terminate the tender,” Gudas told BNS.

The works should be finished over 18 to 19 months, Trakcja-Tiltra said in a press release.

With the second tracks built, passenger trains would be able to travel at the speed of up to 160 kilometers per hour, and freight trains – of up to 120 kph. The projects will be financed from the structural support funds of the European Union (EU) and resources of the Lithuanian national railway company.
