If the construction of quays goes smoothly, the company expects to start carrying out the functions of a container distribution hub by the end of this year, it wrote.

"Today we seem to have no major obstacle that would put a question mark on the whole project," Klaipėdos Smelteė Marketing Director Eduardas Galuškinas told the paper.

"We expect a breakthrough after the quays have been built and the crane has been moved in. This is later summer of this year. The annual container transshipment volume may then increase by up to 150 percent," he said.

Klaipėdos Smeltė is part of Terminal Investment Limited, of the world's largest container terminal operators.
